2018-SUD-002: Substance Use - Peer Recovery Coach

Job Summary:
The Peer Recovery Associate (PRA) will provide mentoring, encouragement, motivational interviewing, recovery skills training, and social skill development for consumer of the program. The PRA is responsible for facilitating the establishment of a strong connection with a community/natural support network. This could involve introducing the consumer to recovery support groups (AA, NA, SMART Recovery, etc.), community activities, and supporting them in attending other helpful community activities that support recovery. Services provided by the PRA will be part of the Person Centered Plan and will be under the guidance and leadership of a SUD Care Manager and/or SUD Therapist.

In addition to the primary services identified above, the recovery coach should have some direct awareness of how a consumer can access a variety of services within their community, but does not have to provide such services directly. Rather, the recovery coach can assist with linking the client to such services, e.g. helping the client connect with the service or obtaining a referral.

Supports strategies will incorporate the principles of empowerment, community inclusion, health and safety assurances, and the use of natural supports. The PRA will work closely with the consumer to assure ongoing satisfaction with the process and outcomes of the supports, services, and available resources.

The PRA will assist the SUD Treatment Team in achieving consumer and program outcomes by participating in team meetings, completing required and beneficial trainings, documenting the provision of direct assistance to consumers, providing peer level services as guided by the consumer’s Individual Plan of Service, and advocating to ensure that programs continue to address the holistic needs of those they serve. 

Job Responsibilities:
1. Recovery Planning
An opportunity for the Peer Support Specialist and the client to jointly assess what services are needed and to develop a plan that will be the basis for services provided. Recovery planning could involve, but is not limited to, identifying triggers for use, developing a relapse prevention plan, and building or rebuilding a support network.
2. Relationship Building
Peer Support Specialist assist clients with developing social skills needed to establish or maintain relationships. Often, this requires assisting clients with repairing, rebuilding, or establishing new support networks in order to achieve and maintain lasting recovery.
3. Leisure Activity Planning-
Clients benefit from recovery support services when they learn new ways to have fun and enjoy life without the inclusion of drugs or alcohol. Recovery coaches can assist the client with skill building efforts related to such things as time management, connecting with positive social activities and supporting/coaching the client in social situations.
4. Substance Use Behavior Education—
Addiction is a chronic, relapsing illness. The recovery coach can assist with educating a client in relapse prevention and in identifying relapse indicators as part of developing a relapse prevention plan.

5. Skills Building
Using coaching, modeling, encouragement, and training strategies to assist consumers in the development of SUD recovery and life management skills. Skill development areas include but are not limited to: addiction recovery, physical health, school/employment, social/relationships, leisure, community involvement, etc.

6. Monitoring
Defined as reviewing the response of treatment as defined in the PCP and the status of the person’s recovery and its effect on their day-to-day life.

7. Support Services.
Support provided one-on-one or in group that includes assisting the family and/or loved ones of the individual in recovery with coping strategies for successfully living with a person with an SUD and/or support the person with the disorder on day-to-day problem solving and connection into the community.

8. Co-Occurring Disorders – Service Level Skills, Attitudes, and Values
Demonstrates advanced level skills, attitudes, and values that are in alignment with principles and practices of the Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment philosophy of WMCMH or possesses a sufficient capacity to readily adopt the principles and practices into clinical practice. Competency areas include: maintaining a welcoming, empathic, and hopeful stance; knowledge of COD population needs and barriers; and skills in crisis response and basic screening. Job Qualifications:
1. High school diploma/equivalent or higher required.

2. The Peer Recovery Associate (PRA) individuals do not require MCBAP certification to provide peer recovery support services but are required to be supervised by a MCBAP certified staff.


2. The Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) does not require MCBAP certification to provide peer recovery support services but are required to be supervised by MCBAP certified staff.

3. Training requirements for the PRA are:

All peer recovery associates should have some basic training in order to assure the provision of quality services, and to assure that their activities “do no harm” to either themselves or the individuals being served. In Michigan, peer recovery associates must receive training appropriate to the tasks in which they will engage. Associates will be selected by the agencies in which they will provide support services. The nature of the services to be provided will directly influence the selection of the peers and the content of training that the peers will receive. The actual training and its content will be at the discretion of the hiring agency. However, there are minimum criteria that should be included in the training, such as:
• Gaining knowledge of community resources.
• Listening skills.
• Taking a non-judgmental stance (the ability to respond positively and provide assistance an individual regardless of personal opinions, experiences, and choices).
• Understanding of confidentiality.
• Establishing boundaries.
• Possessing an attitude that there are many paths to recovery – none any better than another.


3. Training requirements for the PRC are:

a. Peer Recovery Coach (PRC)

In order to be a peer recovery coach, individuals will need to complete the MDCH/BSAAS designated training, the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) Peer Recovery Coach Training or an equivalent training meeting all training components as defined in the MDCH/BSAAS Peer Recovery Support Services Technical Assistance Advisory #07.

4. A PRA must have a minimum of six months in recovery and actively working their own recovery process with an established support system outside of this employment role.


4. The PRC must have two to four years of stable recovery.

5. Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide own transportation to and from meetings and activities at varying work locations including all agency locations in Lake, Mason, and Oceana Counties.

6. Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
